Why train with us

Real skill, real confidence, no shortcuts.

Our mission is simple: give every student the knowledge, hands-on skill, and calm confidence to own, handle, and carry a firearm responsibly — in full compliance with Illinois law. We keep classes small, instruction personal, and the range time generous.

01

Personal attention, every session

Small class sizes mean real coaching on your grip, stance, and decision-making — not a lecture to a crowd.

02

Hands-on from day one

Classroom fundamentals paired with live-fire practice, so skills are tested and built, not just discussed.

03

A welcoming community for everyone

Whether you've never touched a firearm or you're renewing a license, you'll train alongside a patient, judgment-free group of neighbors — of every gender and background.

Illinois CCL, explained

What Illinois actually requires for a Concealed Carry License.

Illinois law is specific about how you qualify. Here's the process from first class to carrying legally — full detail on our IL CCL Guide.

1

Complete 16 hours of ISP-approved training

State law requires 16 total hours combining classroom instruction and live-fire range qualification, taught by an ISP-approved instructor.

2

Pass the live-fire qualification

You'll demonstrate safe handling and marksmanship on the range as part of the course.

3

Receive your certificate of completion

We provide the signed certificate you'll need to submit with your state application.

4

Apply to the Illinois State Police

Submit your application and required documents directly to the ISP, along with the separate state license fee.

At a glance

  • 16 total hours: classroom instruction + live-fire range qualification
  • Must be taught by an ISP-approved instructor — every Carry Institute lead instructor qualifies
  • Current CCL holders can renew with our 3-hour renewal class every 5 years, instead of repeating the full 16-hour course
  • Application, fingerprinting, and background check are handled through the state, not through us
$150 separate state fee

Illinois requires every CCL applicant to pay a $150 license application fee directly to the Illinois State Police. This is a state cost, not part of our course tuition.

We're a new academy — be one of our first reviewers.

The Carry Institute is newly open in Carol Stream, so we don't have a public review history yet. We'd rather tell you that honestly than fake one. If you train with us, we'll ask for your feedback afterward — and your review could be one of the first that helps the next student choose with confidence.

Common questions

Quick answers before you book.

The full FAQ — including refund policy and reciprocity — lives on our dedicated FAQ page.

Do I need a FOID card to take the class?

No — you do not need a FOID card to attend the 16-hour CCL class itself, but you will need one to submit your final Illinois Concealed Carry License application. Many students apply for their FOID around the same time they take our class; we're happy to point you to the state's application process.

What is the separate $150 fee for?

Illinois requires every CCL applicant to pay a $150 license application fee directly to the Illinois State Police. This is a state government cost — it is separate from and not included in our course tuition.

Do I need to bring my own gun?

You're welcome to bring your own handgun and ammunition, or let us know in advance and we'll help arrange options — contact us before class day so we can confirm what's available.

Ready to train with confidence?

Whether you're brand new to firearms or renewing your CCL, we'll help you find the right class and a time that works for you.
